Administrative Law Judge Hearings

Medical Experts and Vocational Experts
Are at the ALJ Hearing for Different Reasons
Administrative Law Judges will sometimes ask a medical or vocational expert, or both, to attend a hearing. If a medical expert is asked to attend, it will be to give an opinion as to whether there is enough medical evidence to establish that you meet or equal one of the government's disability listings. If the SSA's medical expert says no, they may also be asked to give an opinion about your functional limitations.
When a vocational expert is asked to attend, it is usually because the Judge expects your claim to make it through the fifth and final step in the disability evaluation process: Can you do any other work?
The vocational expert will be asked to consider your medical conditions, age, education, prior work experience, and skills, and to give an opinion as to whether or not you could meet the demands of other occupations that exist in the national economy. If you cannot, then you should be granted benefits.
