Social Security Disability Benefits and Hepatitis C
If you have been diagnosed with hepatitis C and have found it difficult to continue working because of its effects or the effects of treatment, you may also find that convincing the Social Security Administration (SSA) of that fact is even more difficult still.
The experienced lawyers at Shifrin Newman Smith Inc. can help you obtain Social Security disability benefits, and if we don't win, you won't pay any attorney fees.
We have been dedicated exclusively to handling claims for government disability benefits since 1985. We have helped thousands of people throughout the state of Ohio, including many with chronic hepatitis C. These experiences, combined with our knowledge of the law and the disability system here in Ohio, lead us to believe that we can help you too. Help your own cause. Avoid heavy drinking and other activities that are likely to aggravate your condition. If you can't do that on your own, our lawyers may be able to put you in touch with a free or low-cost alcohol and drug treatment center in your area.
Symptoms and Treatment
Although most people who have hepatitis C never show any symptoms, many simply never realize that the extreme fatigue and other flu-like symptoms they are experiencing might involve something more than just an ordinary virus.
Once a diagnosis is made, treatment usually consists of interferon injections and ribavirin (taken orally). Although this regimen does not definitively "cure" the disease, in the majority of people it will effectively suppress the disease to the point where it no longer poses a serious health problem. However, the side effects of this treatment regimen can be debilitating in their own right. These effects include extreme fatigue, arthritis and joint pain, vision problems and cognitive difficulties.
It is possible to obtain disability benefits for side effects of hepatitis C itself, and for the debilitating effects of treatment as well. Again, however, you will have to prove that you are unable to earn a minimal income for at least 12 months.
