Social Security Disability and PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often diagnosed in people who have gone through some type of overwhelming life event, such as a sexual assault, or a war or a natural disaster. If you have had this type of experience but don't know why you can't seem to be able to hold down a job or connect with other people now, you may have PTSD.
At Shifrin Newman Smith Inc., we have been exclusively dedicated to handling government disability claims since 1985 and have helped many PTSD sufferers to obtain disability benefits from the government. We can help you too — even if only by connecting you to non-governmental sources of help in your area. To schedule a free consultation with one of our lawyers, call 877-230-5500 or contact us online.
Help your own cause. Seek medical treatment. Follow doctor's orders. Take prescribed medications as directed. Keep a journal detailing the effect that post-traumatic stress disorder has had on your daily life and ability to work.
Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Although SSA does not specifically list post-traumatic stress disorder as an impairment, PTSD is often approved under Listing 12.06 or at Step 5 due to an inability to work. Per Listing 12.06, SSA will consider:
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Intense physical reactions to reminders of the event
- Loss of interest or enjoyment in life
- A pervasive sense of impending doom
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Difficulty connecting to others
