Inpatient Care and Hospital Services
Medicare Part A is the portion of your health care plan that covers medically necessary hospital services, inpatient care and in some cases, hospice and in-home care services as well.
Is This Coverage Available to Me?
The answer in most cases is "Yes." If you paid Medicare taxes while working, you will probably have the option of choosing Part A coverage. Better still, you will most likely not have to pay a premium in order to get it. If you do not qualify for free coverage, you can still choose Medicare Part A. That said, the monthly premium for Medicare Part A is currently almost $500 dollars a month.
What Exactly Does Medicare Part A Cover?
As mentioned above, Medicare Part A may cover medically necessary services provided by hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospices and even home health care providers. Services that may be covered include semi-private rooms, meals, general nursing, miscellaneous hospital services and supplies, rehabilitative services, physical or occupational therapy, home health aide service and hospice care.
Having said all of that, keep in mind that not all physicians or inpatient care providers accept Medicare, that Medicare does not cover the total cost of the services provided and that there is a maximum limit on the number of days of care that will be covered.
It is also important to know that Medicare Part A does not cover long-term care.
