Medical Care Insurance
Medicare Part B covers much of the cost of medically necessary physician services, outpatient care and most of the other services that are not covered by Medicare Part A.
Is This Coverage Available to Me?
If you have received at least 24 months of disability payments from the Social Security Administration (SSA) or the Railroad Retirement Board, or you will turn 65 by the first day of next month — then yes. However, most people have to pay a premium if they want Medicare Part B coverage.
If you want Medicare Part B but are worried that you can't afford it, you may qualify for Extra Help. You should also know that there are general and special enrollment periods for Medicare Part B and that there is a penalty for late enrollment. Premiums for Part B are set on a sliding scale and may change annually. The annual deductible is approximately $140 dollars.
What Exactly Does Medicare Part B Cover?
Medicare Part B may cover medically necessary services such as doctor visits, surgeries, anesthesiologist services, preventative care, screening tests and procedures, laboratory services and outpatient care. As always, keep in mind that not all physicians or inpatient care providers accept Medicare and that Medicare Part B does not provide 100 percent coverage. To save money, you will want to make sure that your doctor accepts Medicare assignments before receiving any services.
