Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage
Medicare Part D is a government-subsidized, privatized insurance plan covering most brand-name and generic prescription drugs.
Is This Coverage Available to Me?
There are two ways to obtain Medicare Part D coverage. The first way is to make Medicare Part D coverage a part of your original Medicare plan. To do this, you must first have either Part A or Part B coverage (or both, but only one is required). In most cases, adding Part D coverage this way means that you will pay a separate monthly premium and sometimes an annual deductible.
The second way to obtain Part D coverage is to enroll in a Medicare advantage plan (Part C). Most advantage plan providers include Part D coverage in their plans but to be eligible, you must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
If you want Medicare Part D coverage but can't afford it, you may qualify for Extra Help.
Last, as with Part C, there are deadlines for enrolling in Medicare Part D, penalties for late enrollment and complicated timing issues and plan options that should be discussed with an experienced attorney before you have to make your decision.
Choosing a Medicare Part D Plan
There are many Medicare Part D prescription drug plans available to residents of Ohio and other states. Each one provides different levels of coverage. Generally, the more coverage you get the higher your premium will be. Many plans have coverage gaps that need to be considered as well.
