Getting family benefits through Social Security Disability
Social Security Disability Insurance is enough to support an individual. But what if you have a family? They need support, too. And certain types of family members are indeed eligible for benefits.

If you're like many people, you are more worried about your family's welfare than your own. At Shifrin Newman Smith Inc., our attorneys and staff can help you pursue benefits on their behalf so that they have the support they need.
Who is eligible for family benefits?
Family benefits are only available to certain people. To be eligible, the person must depend on a disabled adult for financial support. And they have to be related in a certain way. Those eligible for family benefits include:
- A spouse age 62 or older
- A spouse of any age caring for a child who is either disabled or under 16 years old
- Your unmarried children under 18 — if the child is still in secondary school, that limit goes up a year
- An unmarried child over the age of 18 who has a disability, so long as that disability started before the child turned 22
How much can we receive in family benefits?
Eligible family members can receive as much as half of what the disabled person receives. Family benefits payments come in the form of a monthly check, just like other Social Security payments.
But the system is complicated, and good legal advice can help. To talk to a lawyer about family benefits, call 877-230-5500 or contact us online.
