How Much Is Too Much?
You must have very little in the way of income or resources before you can actually become eligible to receive SSI benefits. You can have one house (which you must live in) and one car. Beyond that, you are limited to having $2,000 in resources ($3,000 for couples).
Assets for SSI purposes include:
- Cash, on hand or in the bank
- Land or real property (other than the exception for one home)
- Retirement accounts
- Stocks
- Life insurance
- Any other assets that could be converted to cash and used for food or shelter
